DormNav Back to the map

Sponsors

Sponsors, and the rules they follow.

DormNav is free and has no accounts. A few local businesses may pay for one labeled card. This page names them and lists every rule a card must follow. The rules are written into the app's code, so a card that breaks one never appears.

Who sponsors DormNav now

Nobody yet. Every sponsored slot is empty this term.

The first four weeks after launch run with every slot empty, so the number of real views can be measured before anything is sold.

What every card shows

Specimen, not a sponsor

Not counted yet. Scroll until half the card is on screen.

  1. Sponsored by, and the business name. It is the first line of the card, above the headline, on screen before you tap anything. A card never says Promoted or Featured. A guide that a business pays for during move-in week says Presented by.
  2. Why this? The one thing used to show the card: the words you searched for, or the place you opened. Nothing else is used.
  3. Report. Sends that card to us. We read every report. Your search words and where you came from are not sent.

Where a card can appear

Here, at most one at a time

  • Below your search results, one card per set of results, never first.
  • Below the facts on a building or place you open, one card per sheet.
  • Below the departures on a bus stop you open, one card per sheet.

Never here

  • On the map itself. No sponsored pins.
  • During walking directions.
  • In the home screen widget or any notification.
  • As a push message. DormNav sends no promotional notifications.

What chooses a card

Only the words you typed into search, or the place you opened.

Your classes and schedule stay on your phone and are never used for a card. Your location is never asked for to show a card. There are no accounts, so there is no profile to use.

How a view is counted

Half the card on screen, for one full second, counted once.

A card counts as seen only when at least half of it is on your screen for at least one continuous second. It counts once each time you open a search or a sheet. A card drawn below the fold that you never scroll to counts nothing, and a card counts nothing while the app is in the background. This is the viewable impression standard set by the Media Rating Council for display ads.

Views are counted, with no record of who saw the card; taps on Directions, Call and Website will be counted the same way once those buttons exist on the card. Ad blockers and privacy settings hide some views, so the numbers a sponsor sees run low, never high. The business's own count at its register is the truest number.
